We’ve all been there. You’ve had a long day and you just want to play your favorite game. You sit down at your computer ready to grind out some wins and then you see the game needs to patch!
Why can’t your game just be ready when you are? Well, wait no more, because we’re bringing you the ability to background patch your games while you’re AFK so that watching update bars becomes a thing of the past.
Background patching allows the Riot Client to download and install patches for all games, so long as the Riot Client is open. If you choose to opt-in, this feature will keep your games up to date so your games are always ready to play at a moment's notice. Future functionality will also include the ability to have the Riot Client open on startup.
This first version of background patching will only fully update VALORANT. As League of Legends, Legends of Runeterra, and Teamfight Tactics all update partially within their game clients, the ability for them to fully update via background patch is not supported just yet. All that being said, part of the patching process for those games does happen in the Riot Client and that part will be supported by background patching, meaning players can look forward to a quicker patching process across all games.
In the meantime, we are working hard to unlock full background patching for League of Legends, Legends of Runeterra, and Teamfight Tactics as soon as possible. Players who have the Riot Client beta will have this functionality today with a full launch scheduled next month.
Visit our Player Support page for more information and how to enable background patching.
